The Keto Diet

One of the most popular diets out right now is the Keto Diet. A diet which involves eating very little carbs and eating foods with higher fat contents and moderate amounts of protein. After a few weeks of following this diet your body will enter a state of ketosis where your liver starts to produce ketones which then become your main source of energy.

Limiting the amount of glucose that gets digested by the body in the form of carbohydrates or sugar essentially tricks your body into starvation. This allows your body to burn your fat faster than you can put it on. The best part about this diet is that you do not need to restrict as much portion wise as you would most other diets.

So, what can you eat on this diet?

Any food that is high in fat is perfect for this diet. Cheese, oil, butter, milk, cream, bacon, ghee butter, or anything along these lines are perfectly fine to eat and encouraged. As far as protein goes, you can eat anything so long as it does not contain a lot of carbohydrates. For example, nuts, fish, meat, poultry, Greek yogurt, and so on are all great so there is a good amount of variety. The key is to limit your amount of carbs. This can be difficult when it comes to sauces, or finger food because you are not allowed to having things like corn tortillas, rice wraps, or wheat bread. Vegetables are fine, but in limited amounts and fruit should be avoided for the high sugar content it contains.

Here are some examples of snacks and meals that are great for the Keto diet:

  • Salmon in a creamy butter sauce on a bed of spinach.
  • A Charcuterie board filled with cheeses, meats, and nuts.
  • Korean Fried Chicken coated in almond flour with Pork Rind chips.

There are more and more stores embracing the Keto diet and are stocking up on products that make it easy to follow.

What happens to your body once your body hits a state of ketosis?

Once your body gets used to being on this new diet you will tend to feel fewer craving for snacks. If you are overweight you will begin to lose a consistent amount of weight. It also helps you focus because you are no longer in taking carbohydrates which tend to fog up your mind.

The Keto diet also increases the amount of lipids that are produced which help promote brain function. A lot of people start noticing an increase in energy. Sugar and carbs usually provide a short burst of energy and are good if you are about to exercise, but fat tends to burn slower allowing for a steadier stream of energy instead of sporadic bursts.
